Pinterest viewed Childbirth pin as Pornography

Childbirth education is important to me, and I am starting to consider myself a birth advocate. Please share this information with whom you think might be interested in joining me in my request that Pinterest review it's policies, and not categorized childbirth as pornography.

Here is the request I sent to Pinterest:

To whom it may concern,

I received an email alerting me of the removal of a pin under my board "Childbirth," with the reasoning that Pinterest does not allow nudity. The pin in question (seen here: http://www.homebirth.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Feb-march-2011-047-337x450.jpg) is a photo image of a breech birth baby. This is not obscene or inappropriate. I am offended that this pin of a birth would be lumped into a category which your organization deems unacceptable for people with kids and families. The birth of a baby is a beautifully natural human process, which should be normalized, not stigmatized.

I will repin the original link, and hope that your organization rethinks its policies, and encourages those who manually review reported pins to use discretion when discerning whether the image of a child being born should be synonimous with lude or pornographic nudity.

Warmly,
Juliet Swedlund

Here is the blog and photo in question.  When I did try to repin the blog post, this is the message I received:

Sorry!
You cannot pin that image because it contains pornographic material.

I also quickly received an automated response that restated their policies on nudity, to which I responded:

Thank you for your reply. While I am aware of your current poilcy, I am advocating that your organization review the purpose and reasoning behind such a policy, and ask yourselves if an image of a child birth should be considered inappropriate. Further more, when trying to repin from the original site, I received the following message:

Sorry!
You cannot pin that image because it contains pornographic material.

It is truly insulting that you would call childbirth pornography. Please review my original request, and provide a thoughtful and intentional reponse.

Warmly,
Juliet

Please join me in my effort to tell Pinterest that childbirth IS NOT pornography.

The birth of my beautiful baby girl!

Give. Grow. Inspire.

The Downtown Y is in full swing with our Partners With Youth annual campaign.  At the Y, we believe lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. With your support and generosity, we can continue to address these and other pressing issues - and expand our work to reach more people.

We need your support! The Y currently provides more than $19 million annually in free and subsidized services. Your gift to the Y has a meaningful, lasting impact in the Seattle community.

There are many ways your gift helps children and teens. Gifts can be paid in full or in 10 monthly payments.

$100/month ($1,000)
Sponsors books and supplies for a formerly homeless young adult attending college.

$50/month ($500)
Supports counseling for a family in crisis to help prevent hospitalization of a child.

$25/month ($250)
Provide two people at risk of diabetes support for healthy living.

$10/month ($100)
Ensures low-income youth have access to Y facilities and after-school programs.

Consider giving a gift to the Downtown Y to change lives - together we can make our community a better place!

No Ocean? No Problem!

Creative and fun for surfers at heart who are currently land-locked!  Tarp Surfing!

I want to try!

Yesterday's ice cream:  Yesterday was a co-worker's birthday and we celebrated the right way with mint chocolate chip ice cream cake.  I LOVE ice cream cake.  I mean, Matt and I are having an ice cream wedding cake, that's how much I love it, but I am not so much a fan of mint chocolate chip.  Everyone seems to LOVE it.  I don't get it.  But it was ice cream and it was free - life doesn't get any better.

Columbia City!

Matt and I are moving to Columbia City!  SO excited!  The new place got a walk score of 100!

Exciting, huh?  I don't fully comprehend that "Subway" is our grocery store, but there is a grocery store close :)
  • Two bedrooms
  • Newly remodeled kitchen with stainless steel appliances (disher washer included)
  • Dog friendly!
  • Vegetable and fruit garden (fairly large, too)
  • Hardwood floors
  • Washer and dryer!
  • Parking space
  • Farmers Market two blocks away
Awesome!

Maybe it's not ice cream, but I bought it from an ice cream shop.  Yesterday it was Blueberry Sorbet.

The Seattle YMCA Keeps Impressing Me

Extremely powerful video.  I love that I work for an organization that does such beautiful work!

I want to share good for a living!

Tuesday ice cream: old-fashioned vanilla with cupcake magic shell.  Maybe I'll break the mold today with something more unique again.
