Here is the request I sent to Pinterest:
To whom it may concern,
I received an email alerting me of the removal of a pin under my board "Childbirth," with the reasoning that Pinterest does not allow nudity. The pin in question (seen here: http://www.homebirth.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Feb-march-2011-047-337x450.jpg) is a photo image of a breech birth baby. This is not obscene or inappropriate. I am offended that this pin of a birth would be lumped into a category which your organization deems unacceptable for people with kids and families. The birth of a baby is a beautifully natural human process, which should be normalized, not stigmatized.
I will repin the original link, and hope that your organization rethinks its policies, and encourages those who manually review reported pins to use discretion when discerning whether the image of a child being born should be synonimous with lude or pornographic nudity.
Warmly,
Juliet Swedlund
Here is the blog and photo in question. When I did try to repin the blog post, this is the message I received:
Sorry!
You cannot pin that image because it contains pornographic material.
You cannot pin that image because it contains pornographic material.
I also quickly received an automated response that restated their policies on nudity, to which I responded:
Thank you for your reply. While I am aware of your current poilcy, I am advocating that your organization review the purpose and reasoning behind such a policy, and ask yourselves if an image of a child birth should be considered inappropriate. Further more, when trying to repin from the original site, I received the following message:
Sorry!
You cannot pin that image because it contains pornographic material.
It is truly insulting that you would call childbirth pornography. Please review my original request, and provide a thoughtful and intentional reponse.
Warmly,
Juliet
Please join me in my effort to tell Pinterest that childbirth IS NOT pornography.
The birth of my beautiful baby girl!
